Mohammed Titi (actor , "Yes Theatre " in Hebron) "Theater changed a lot of my personality, I became more optimistic."

9years ago, "Yes Theatre" was established in Hebron, Palestine, where many residents had no experience of playing drama. In Hebron, children of Palestine live under heavy stress because Israeli soldiers watch them with guns. So "Yes Theatre" teaches young students the way to express themselves and think deeply observing their circumstances through drama education. I interviewed leading actor ,Mohammad Titi on his activity in the theater and his motivation for acting.

1)about Al-Fawwar Camp:

Q Al-Fawwar

It is a camp for the Palestinian refugees, inhabited by 10000 people, in 1km2. the original people of this camp were expelled from their villages in 1948 (Al Nakba)*. This camp lacks all minimum infrastructure for human living. Houses are intensively located close to each other; there is no privacy. Streets are narrow. Those factors make it hard to live in such circumstances. If you want to know more about Palestinian refugees you can search the web.

2)How did you become an actor?

Since my childhood I love to imitate people and make them laugh, so when I heard from the Ministry of Culture that there are workshops of drama, and theatre I joined them; and that was my first step in theatre.

3) Why did you begin acting?

First of all, as I lost my mom in an early age, and went through a hard childhood in the camp, I had no clue about living; therefore, acting helped me to express myself in addition to getting rid of negative things that affected me. Actually, this is what happened, theatre changed a lot of my personality, I became more optimistic.

4) what are you doing now?

Now I work in Yes Theatre, an important theatre in Palestine; it works with children from different ages as well as adults. In the mean time, I train kids on a play based on the improvisation of kids taking into consideration all the aspects of their life. (marginalization) beside the theatre activities. In addition to my work for Yes Theatre, I participate in TV shows as an actor.

5) what is the joy of acting?

Most of the time it is hard to show intimate things in general life, but in theatre you can express yourself and mention those things deeply. The authentic joy is when you reflect your real emotions that you have to the audience.

*AlNakba: occupying the Palestinian land in 1948 and expelling their indigenous people. There are those who immigrated outside and others inside Palestine.

"Yes Theatre for Communication among Youth (YT) is a Palestinian non-governmental organization that was established in 2008. Yes Theatre believes that theatre and drama can positively influence the children and youth to create a change in their society. Therefore, it works to inspire Palestinian children and youth in general and those in Hebron in particular to try out and to develop creative and constructive reactions to the challenges in their daily lives."( Yes theatre's website)
