Save the Constructivist buildings in Moscow.'

'Save the Constructivist buildings in Moscow.'

I interviewed a Russian designer Irina Goryacheva ,who created The New Moscow map showing the existing Constructivist buildings with her colleagues in 'Baklazanas', a designers' group in the Republic of Lithuania.

1) Why (for whom) did you create this?

We have created this The New Moscow map with the support of our partners and one of the most favourite clients - the Center of Russian Avantgarde. A very limited edition of the maps has been printed and using silk creen printing method.

It is the map of existing Constructivist buildings in Moscow. Constructivist architecture was a form of new experimental Soviet architecture that appeared in the Soviet Union in the 1920s and early 1930s combining geometrical shapes, new technologies, and communist ideology. The Constructivist movement produced many pioneering and unique projects and had a great impact on contemporary architecture.

The main reason why we created this map and also the main challenge was to focus on the problem of demolition of the Constructivist buildings in Moscow. Many Constructivist architectural masterpieces are either in ruins or under threat of demolition nowadays so the land could be sold to developers. Despite all the public protests and numerous petitions Russia’s unique architectural heritage is destroyed by the authorities.

Constructivist buildings were neglected for much of the Soviet period since late 1930s and people nowadays don’t appreciate this unique heritage, while it’s one of the very few things Russians should be actually proud of.With this map we wanted to attract attention to the problem of demolition of the Constructivist architecture in Moscow and to show it’s pure exceptional beauty.

2) What did you put in the map ? Maybe it is symbolic.

The New Moscow map celebrates Moscow architectural avant-garde heritage. It features 180 most stunning examples of Constructivist architecture in Moscow, both world-famous buildings (from Melnikov House and the Narkomfin Building to Shukhov Tower to Lenin’s Mausoleum) and less known residential buildings and constructivist quarters and settlements within the limits of Moscow Ring Road (MKAD). The map celebrates the avantgarde landmarks of the early Soviet era, including workers' clubs, schools, factory kitchens, garages, communal housing, factories, bathhouses and even the first soviet crematorium and columbarium.

Besides these 180 leading examples of Constructivist architecture in Moscow we included into the map some remarkable elements of Russian industrial art from the 1920s and 1930s.

For example, the patterns we used celebrate the work of Russian designers Lyubov Popova and Varvara Stepanova who helped pave the way for all modern day graphic designers as they created art with a purpose in hopes of bettering the society in which they lived.

The four roundels also refer to Soviet textile and porcelain design of 1920-1930 and their propaganda capacities celebrating industrialization, electrification, collective farming and aeronautics, announcing an era of a new type of human, trained by the overall mechanization of everyday life.
Besides that the map also includes very expressive lines from the collection of poems of one the most popular and outstanding proletarian poets of early post-revolutionary Russia Aleksei Gastev.

3) As a designer, what influenced you ?

As a designer I was influenced by 2 things when I was working on this map.
First of all, I’m deeply influenced by Constructivism, it’s concepts and aesthetics, I think it is the predominant feature of my work and it’s quite visible.
Secondly, I can’t help taking the situation with the demolition of the Constructivist buildings personally, the same applies to the demolition of any cultural heritage I see no matter if it’s Russian or not. It is absolutely heartbreaking and it is really painful that there are not many things you can do about it. So I guess I was driven by this struggle for justice and desire to attract attention to the problem till it’s not too late, to save what can still be saved.
